Welcome to RentersList.org!
We're a tenant resource website created for all tenants to help you pursue a strong, professional, positive, and mutually beneficial relationship with your landlords. Understanding the role of a tenant may seem simple enough, but getting a landlord's perspective on the role of a tenant is the ultimate in "insider knowledge". Landlords are people too. And most if not all of them have been tenants at some points in their life.
This site was designed by an Ontario landlord, so while focus at times may be concentrated specifically on the Ontario-angle with respective to tenancies, the information is still universally applicable. Besides the tenant quiz, interesting articles, shared stories and experiences, etc, the prime resource will be a series of tenant checklists (ie. Renter's lists) that are designed to help you organize, prepare, and thrive in your tenancy, plus so much more!

- Ontario Landlord Tenant Board - Resources for both landlords and tenants (focus on dispute resolution)
- The Residential Tenancies Act (Ontario) - Not exactly nighttime reading, but this is the Ontario law pertaining to all things landlord/tenant
- Services Alberta - Enforcement branch of Alberta's Tenant laws
- The Residential Tenancies Act (Alberta) - Legislation governing landlords and tenants for Alberta
- Residential Tenancy Branch (BC) - Under the Office of Housing and Construction Standards for BC
- Residential Tenancy Act (BC) - Legistlation governing landlords and tenants for British Columbia (BC)
- The Law of the Régie du logement (PQ) - Quebec operates under civil code. The Regis is the branch of government pertaining to landlords and tenants
- An Act Respecting The Regie du logement (PQ) - Areas of Quebec's civil code pertain to rental issues. But this Act is a good place to start.

The Perfect Tenant
Like landlords, tenants often get a bad wrap. Tenants have a great deal of responsibility and are in essence a business partner with the landlord. Understanding the role of the tenant and how to be the "perfect" tenant is a home run in any landlord-tenant relationship. It's also a major core of this website
The Perfect Landlord
Landlording isn't easy. It's a lot harder than being a tenant. And while a landlord is a business owner, there are ethical, moral, and legal considerations a landlord faces all the time. Striving to be a perfect landlord pays out in dividends with happy tenants and of course, a good bottom line.
The Partnership
Our philosophy is that a landlord and tenant are 50/50 partners during their tenure. They each are integral to the other's success. When one side fails, the other side cannot win. Partnership is crucial to ensuring everyone has a positive and beneficial experience. And that means acting as partners rather than self-motivated individuals.
The Rental Cycle
Before, during, and after a tenancy each has critical components, and processes that must be understood along the way. Like all partnerships, eventually they end. This website focuses on the expectations and the benefits of making the most of a positive environment and relationship in each phase.3 Things EVERY Tenant Should Know
- 1. You should always have a lease and read and understand it.
- 2. Always know who to contact and when for maintenance and emergencies
- 3. Know the rules and responsibilities of both the tenant and the landlord and follow the rules!
Why Is It Better To RENT Than Own?
- Short Term Housing - If you plan on staying at your residence 5 yrs or less, it is less costly to rent than own.
- Free Up Net Worth - Owning means tying up a lot of $$$ in your home. If real estate markets slow down, you're not likely to get your money out when you want to
- Housing Is Expensive - Buying a house means taxes, borrowing costs, closing costs, fees, down payment etc. Renting allows you to save more of your money!
- Maintenance & Reparis - Living in an owned house can also have unexpected maintenance and repair costs. Roof, windows, furnace, plumbing, etc. are high cost items you don't have to worry about!
- Regulated Rent - As a rent your costs are relatively fixed. You don't have to worry about dramatic rises in rent or other areas so you can plan out your budgeting easier
Avoid The WORST Tenant Mistakes
- SIgning a lease without reading it.
- Not getting renter's insurance.
- Eliminating rental prospects based on size alone.
- Picking the wrong roommate.
- Failing to pay rent on time/violating landlord-tenant trust.
Funny Letters To Landlord
- And their 18 year old son is continually banging his balls against my fence
- 50% of the walls are damp, 50% have crumbling plaster and 50% are plain filthy.
- I want some repairs done to my stove as it has backfires and burnt my knob off.
- When the workmen were here they put their tools in my wife's new drawers and made a mess. Please send men with clean tools to finish the job and keep my wife happy.
- The person next door has a large erection in his back garden, which is unsightly and dangerous.
- Our kitchen floor is very damp, we have two children and would like a third, so will you please send someone to do something about it.
- Will you please send someone to mend our cracked sidewalk? Yesterday my wife tripped on it and is now pregnant.
- I request your permission to remove my drawers in the kitchen.
- I am writing on behalf of my sink, which is running away from the wall.
- Could you please send someone to fix our bath tap. My wife got her toe stuck in it and it is very uncomfortable for us.
- Would you please send a man to repair my downspout. I am an old age pensioner and need it straight away.
- This is to let you know that there is a smell coming from the man next door.
- The toilet is blocked and we cannot bathe the children until it is cleared.
